Good Time

Firmament(s) episode 7

Whatever something makes you feel will probably make someone else feel the same. You can fully trust that your perspective on music is not so unique that what you hear as music everyone else will hear as noise.

I’ve been listening to a podcast with Josh Safdie, Benny Safdie & Paul Thomas Anderson in which they discuss the Safdie brothers’ films ‘Good Time’ and ‘Uncut Gems’. Both films feature protagonists going into more and more convoluted plots to achieve their goals. The protagonists are constantly trying to convince the people around them to stick with their plans with the idea that if everyone just go’s along with their scheme then everything will work out. The Safdie brothers liken this mentality to film making - you have a vision for a film at first people are up for making it but then suddenly the shoots got to be 5am for the light and people are dropping out.

Making music is similar, if you ask anyone if they want to be in a band they’ll say yes I reckon but if you ask someone if they want to spend Sunday evening in a pirate studios to rehearse they’ll probably say no.

You’ve even got to convince yourself to go along with your own ideas. Which leads me to this noisy thing that I made this morning. It’s quite physically unpleasant to listen to I would say but it’s a sound I’ve not heard before. The remnants of my saxophone playing can be heard through the electronic mangling which passes my test of being just human enough.
