The circus and the weird in-between then circus again
My favourite pictures from the circus and the weird in-between (ie the last year)
I return to the circus next week. I have said goodbye to my students and finally convinced them that I really am going to the circus. I’ve spent the week going to the dentist and getting my saxophones repaired, the thinking being that if either my teeth or my saxophones fail whilst I’m in a field in Stroud then that’s totally disastrous.
I’m reading Michael Praetorius’s Syntagma Musicum. A Seventeeth century treatise on all of music with an entire book dedicated to the musical instruments of the time. I’m looking at lathes and woodworking tools on eBay. There is infinite ground to be covered in researching and building new musical instruments. I have no intention of making instruments ‘properly’ but I imagine creating some Dr Suess-esque orchestra of ridiculously proportioned attempts at medieval Chamaleaus and Crumhorns.
I’ve got lots and lots of notebooks and pastels and pencils and such because I had it in my head that Van Gogh started painting when he was 28 so I should do the same. I’m comforted by the wikipedia entries of outsider artists because they’re usually a bit older when they start than your typical musician.
I planned last year to keep a detailed daily diary of the circus but I didn’t write a single word. This year there will be less that is new to me and I think that will give me the energy to write.
Looking forward to a glimpse of the diary.
